Redevelop Kalyan, Dombivli station: Kalyan MP demanded in Loksabha

KALYAN: Member of Parliament from Kalyan Dr Shrikant Shinde on Wednesday made a demand for the redevelopment of Kalyan and Dombivali railway stations in Loksabha under redevelopment scheme being implemented by Ministry of Railways through PPP (Publi-Private Partnership).Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu assured him that the redevelopment of Kalyan will be taken up soon. He also assured him about the inclusion of Dombivali station in the scheme.
Under the scheme, 400 stations, belonging to A1 and A category are going to be redeveloped through PPP. The first phase of the scheme have been launched with 23 stations which include five stations from Mumbai suburban section, namely Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), Thane, Mumbai Central, Bandra Terminus and Borivali. While Kalyan has been included in the overall scheme, it did not find the place in the first phase.
Expressing surprise over the omission of Kalyan and Dombivali, two of the busiest stations on central railway,Shinde raised the issue during the question hour in Loksabha. He congratulated Railways minister Suresh Prabhu for successfully launching the first phase of redevelopment. However, he stressed the need to take up the redevelopment of Kalyan station on an urgent basis. He told the house that Kalyan junction caters to more than 3 lakh 60 thousand commuters daily. More than 2 lakh tickets are sold per day. More than 500 long distance and suburban trains either halt or originate and terminate at the station. Dombivali station sees the movement of more than 3 lakh passengers daily. It sells more than 2.5 lakh daily and seasonal tickets per day. Dombivli station have been topping the chart of the busiest station for the last three years.
While responding to Shinde’s query, Prabhu assured him that the redevelopment of Kalyan railway station would be taken up soon. As far as redevelopment of Dombivali station under the scheme is concerned, the relevant data would be gathered and the decision would be taken. He also informed that the work of Thakurli greenfield terminus would begin soon
